Scholarships

As part of our vision to build financially healthy communities, First Credit Union invests in youth. We do this through financial literacy workshops and by awarding annual scholarships to local students continuing their post-secondary education.

Students interested in applying for a credit union scholarship should do so through the application guidelines for their community.

Powell River and Texada Island

The following scholarships are available to Powell River students:

The CULEAD Young Leaders Program is for graduating grade 12 students planning to further their education. Participants receive practical work experience and mentoring from business professionals on a wide range of topics that will help them prepare for their future careers. Upon the successful completion of the program, students are awarded a cash scholarship of $2,000. For information about the 2019 CULEAD Young Leaders Program and how you can apply, review the program outline.

The Ruth Allan Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship awarded to a First Credit Union member who has demonstrated the capacity to save for and contribute to the cost of their education. It was Ruth Allan, affectionately known in Powell River as the Credit Union Lady, who, through the original credit union’s school-savings program, taught children about the importance of saving. This scholarship honours her legacy. Students can apply for this scholarship through the annual Brooks High School Scholarship awards program.

Finally, there are two First Credit Union Scholarships worth $500 each awarded to First Credit Union members. Students can apply for these scholarships through the annual Brooks High School Scholarship awards program.
