UPDATE: Chip enabled debit cards
Starting in September, 2012, First Credit Union began releasing microchip enabled debit cards to all of our members, Due to changing regulations regarding debit card use in Canada, it was required that all members exchange their magnetic stripe debit cards for the new chip card. The microchips contained within these cards store and process data more securely. The data on the chip is extremely difficult to copy or change, minimizing the risk of debit card fraud.
In order to most securely issue our members their new debit cards, over the past several months we have been contacting our members to ask that they visit their local branch in order to receive their new card. All "magnetic stripe" debit cards will have expired as of December 31, 2012. If you are experiencing card issues and you are using a magnetic stripe debit card rather than a chip card, you must contact your local branch in order to have your card replaced.
When you use your new debit card, you will still input a personal identification number (PIN). When using a chip reading automated teller machine (ATM) or point-of-sale (POS) card terminal, you will insert your card in the terminal, removing it only when prompted at the end of the transaction. If you are using your card at a POS terminal that does not read chip cards yet, your card will be swiped as it is currently.
At your local branch, one of our Financial Services Representatives will issue you a new card. You have the ability to change the PIN on this card at any time by visiting one of our ATMs or any ATM on THE EXCHANGE® network.

Buyer Protection Extended Warranty
Every time you use your MEMBER CARD® debit card to make a purchase, you are protected against things like loss, theft, damage or breakage for a full 90 days after the purchase. You will also have the security of Extended Warranty which can double the manufacturer's warranty up to one year longer. Best of all, there are no forms to fill out, no applications, and no extra cost. Chequing accounts are also offered the same protection.
This coverage offers protection on the purchase of most retail items - and that includes gifts. For a full 90 days after the purchase, the item is protected if it is lost, stolen, or dropped and broken.
Valid claims will be satisfied either by replacing the lost or damaged item, or by a cash payment in an amount not to exceed the amount of the total purchase price.
The program doubles the warranty period of purchased item up to one entire year, as long as the manufacturer's warranty is valid in Canada for five or less years.
