Facebook Campaign Leads to $10,000 Donation for Powell River Search and Rescue
Powell River, BC, June 10, 2013: Powell River Search and Rescue (SAR) is in need of a new rescue vehicle, and their fundraising efforts just received a significant boost. On April 22, 2013, FCU announced a fundraising campaign for SAR, pledging to donate $5 to the volunteer-led rescue group for every new ‘like’ on the company’s Facebook page. After a month and a half, the community raised close to $5,000 for SAR by supporting the promotion on Facebook. Inspired by the community’s support, FCU has committed to doubling the funds, increasing the donation amount to $10,000.
“The community’s engagement with this fundraiser has been outstanding,” marketing and communications specialist Charlene Reinisch said. “The new rescue vehicle is vital to SAR, and the community made their support clear.”
Powell River SAR volunteers are excited about the donation that will go toward their new rescue vehicle (estimated to cost $50,000). An added benefit of the campaign was the increase in community awareness about their organization. FCU filmed and posted YouTube clips about SAR’s gear, training process, and need for a new rescue vehicle, which allowed FCU Facebook fans to learn more about what SAR does for Powell River residents.
“This campaign not only brought us closer to purchasing a new rescue vehicle, but it also increased our profile in the community,” Randy Mitchell, Chief Trainer at SAR, said. “This is a huge advantage for future rescues and future fundraising initiatives.”
“We strive to make a positive impact on the community with everything we do,” said Charlene. “Providing Powell River Search and Rescue with a $10,000 donation helps their organization, as well as the entire community.”
Members Receive Close To $200,000 in Profit Share, Just Days Before First Credit Union Celebrates its 74th AnniversaryPowell River, BC, June 7, 2013: First Credit Union’s (FCU) annual profit share payment, totaling over $185,000, appears in member accounts today. Along with FCU’s 74th anniversary taking place on Sunday, the month of June brings significant milestones for the credit union this year.
Making a difference in the community is integral to the credit union’s operations: in 2012, First Credit Union gave a total of $73,000 in donations and sponsorships to over 75 organizations. Combined, the communities in which First Credit Union serves have received over half a million dollars in the forms of donations, sponsorships, and scholarships in the past year.
“We are proud to offer significant contributions to organizations that positively impact the communities that support us,” VP communications and culture Sandra McDowell said. “Giving back to those who have allowed FCU to remain in business for so many years is the foundation of our operations.”
June also marks the end of the school year, which means graduates will soon receive the many scholarships and bursaries that FCU awards to local students. Five secondary students who are participating in FCU’s Young Leaders program this summer will receive $7,500, and an additional $7,000 will be presented to the 2013 graduating class this weekend.
“Because the organization is owned by the community, profits are given back locally in the form of patronage, donations, sponsorships, scholarships and community investment,” Sandra explained. “We value our members for their business, and with our annual profit share payments, we are able to reward them for their continuing support.”
Linda Wegner to write book for First Credit Union’s 75th anniversaryPowell River, BC, May 28, 2013: In preparation of First Credit Union’s 75th anniversary, Powell River writer Linda Wegner will write a book about the credit union’s history as it has evolved from Powell River Credit Union in 1939 to First Group of Companies today. The book will be released at First Credit Union’s 75th anniversary celebration, which will take place on June 9th, 2014.
After seventy-five years in business, First Credit Union is excited to have their history available to its staff and to its members. “As the first credit union in British Columbia, our history is vast and interesting,” said Vice President of Communications and Culture Sandra McDowell.” The 75th anniversary is a wonderful opportunity to take time to capture our rich history in the form of a book. We are thrilled to be working with local author and credit union enthusiast Linda Wegner for this project.”
Wegner has already started her research, sifting through First Credit Union’s archives of photographs and newspaper articles from the 1930s and beyond. She also plans to interview staff, board representatives, and long-term members of First. “I’m excited about the opportunity,” Wegner said. “I’ve experienced the rewards of being a credit union member for many years, so I’m looking forward to researching and writing about First Credit Union’s journey.”
Linda Wegner has four published non-fiction books. She founded Words of Worth, which offers services in presentations and workshops, professional writing, and research. She also contributes to several newspapers and magazines in British Columbia.
First Credit Union is already in the planning stages of its 75th anniversary celebration. There will be many fun activities for Powell River residents at the event, including the book unveiling. More details will be released in 2014.
